Un Coeur Simple (A Simple Soul)
by Gustave Flaubert

Un Cœur Simple (A Simple Soul) is the story of a woman called Felicité. After Théodore whom she hoped to be with marries a rich woman instead just to avoid conscription, Felicité leaves the farm where she works and starts a position as a servant, and becomes a very loyal, giving person.

Unable to forget her first love, she devotes herself completely to her new master, Mathilde and her children. But fate seems to always deny her from any love in return. But she is just satisfied in giving even though she doesn't receive anything in return.

Her pet parrot accompanies her till the end. (Sometimes this story is referred to as Le perroquet (TheParrot) in French.
