L'Amour Médecin (Love Is The Best Doctor) was acted for the first time on the 15th of September, 1665, at Versailles, and on the 22nd of the same month at the Palais Royal. The ignorance and quackery of the doctors of the seventeenth century were evils but too real. Molière only put on the stage what was known by everybody, although diverse reasons have been given for his evident contempt of the doctor's science. Four of the doctors represented were the first doctors of the Court. Boileau, at the request of Molière, gave them Greek names, which answered to their real characters.
Molière acted the part of Sganarelle.
