George Dandin
by Molière

George Dandin, ou le Mari Confondu (George Dandin, or the Baffled Husband), the only play by Molière in which a married lady is forgetful of her duty, (with the exception of La Jalousie du Barbouillé, for Angélique is practically the same character in both plays) was intended by him as a critique of the bourgeois of 1668, who all wanted to rise above their condition, and of the proud aristocracy who made use of their money while despising them. Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme has the same subject.
It was played for the first time at Versailles, on the 18th of July, 1668. Molière acted the part of George Dandin; his wife that of Angélique.
