La Fille aux Yeux d'Or (The Girl with the Golden Eyes) is the third part of a trilogy. Part one is entitled Ferragus and part two is The Duchesse de Langeais.
The story on the surface is that of Henri de Marsay, who falls in love with a girl and tries to seduce her and succeeds. He later becomes disappointed since she has another lover.
The larger story is that of Paris, the promise of luxury, riches, and pleasure. The city is fascinating, attractive, yet it is also destructive. Balzac has emphasized the "hellish" nature of Paris in this story.
