Le Lys dans la Vallée (The Lily of the Valley) is an 1835 novel about love and society, and speficially about the affection between Felix de Vandenesse and Henriette de Mortsauf.
Felix de Vandenesse is the youngest child of a noble family of Touraine, in Western Central France, whose prospects have gone south under the Revolution and the Napoleon Era. Felix grows up without much love. His mother sends him away to live with a breast-feeder and then to boarding school where he students are treated very badly. During his return home, he attends a party where he instantly falls in love with a married woman, older than him.
This novel belongs to the Scenes from Provincial Life (Scènes de la Vie de Province) subseries of La Comédie Humaine.
