Johanna Spyri (12 June 1827 – 7 July 1901) was a Swiss author of children's stories, and is best known for her book Heidi. Born Johanna Louise Heusser in the rural Switzerland, as a child she spent several summers in the area around Chur in Graubünden, the setting she later would use in her novels.
Johanna Spyri had by temperament a peculiar skill in writing the simple histories of an innocent world. In all her stories she shows an underlying desire to preserve children alike from misunderstanding and the mistaken kindness that frequently hinder the happiness and natural development of their lives and characters.
Spyri died at her home in Zurich in 1901.
